When I release the parking brake, engage the mowers or try to move my HR-5111, HR-9016, LF-1880, Greens King Diesel or many other diesel products the engine stalls out just like you turned the key off. What do you think the problem might be?

Seat Switch Test Seat Delay Relay Test The first and easiest thing to test would be the seat switch. If your sitting on the seat and the circuit is not complete the electrical system acts as though you are not in the seat. See seat switch test. The second thing to test would be the seat delay relay. In many diesel products this is incorporated into the seat circuit. The purpose of the seat delay relay is so the operator can shift in the seat and not cut out the power to the fuel solenoid causing the engine to shut down. Normally you can come off of the seat for a period of 1 to 2 seconds without the engine shutting off. If this unit has failed it will cause the condition described above. This question usually comes up at the end of the mowing season or after top dressing. At what angles am I supposed to grind my bedknifes?

Grind Angle Chart Please be aware that the angle ground into a brand new bedknife is not always what it is supposed to be when the mower is put into operation. Also be aware that when you install a new bedknife that you are putting two surfaces together that are not necessarily true to each other and even new bedknives HAVE to be ground. One modification that needs to be made to the attached chart is that if you are using Jacobsen super tournament bedknives and your cutting height is below .100 you will need to modify the grind angle on the top face to be -5.5 to -7.5 degrees so that the bedknife doesn’t "drag." Quite often on both Briggs and Stratton and Kohler twin cylinder gasoline engines there is a problem that involves the engine backfiring when the unit is shut off.

Contrary to every thing that has been said and learned about shut down procedures both Briggs and Kohler recommend that the engine be shut down with the throttle control set at half throttle. This will purge the muffler of raw gasoline fumes and in turn eliminate the backfiring issue.

How often should I check my tire pressure?

Check tire pressure every 50 hours or once a month. Use an accurate, low pressure tire gauge. Follow the manufacturer’s guide as to proper inflation rate. Check the pressure while the tires are cool and make sure to inspect tread wear.

What steps should I take to winterize my mower?

Winterizing Guide Just as it is important to maintain your mower during mowing season it is equally important to prepare your mower for the winter season. In doing so you can help to prevent problems such as cracked engine blocks, plugged carburetors, and gelled diesel fuel. Refer to the Winterizing Guide as a basis for protecting your investment during the winter months.

On my Greensking IV there is a delay in the start up of the right front mower. What might be causing this?

Relief Valve Diagram On the Greensking IV the right front mower and the lift lower operate on the same pump section. They also share a cartridge in the five section stack valve. If the Viton o-ring on the main relief cartridge is cracked or in some cases even missing altogether the oil that is supposed to be supplying the right front reel motor will be bypassing back to tank when the lower pedal is being depressed. The file shows the location and part # of the o-ring. If the o-ring is found to be intact it is recommended the reel circuit be flow tested.
